the plan create a color palette for an otherwise bland kitchen space. Create cabinetry that is very cost effective but gives the space a very contemporary and organized look. In order to purchase new cabinets, we would need to spend in the thousands so what my design assistant and I came up with is Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation Kit.

CLEAN & SAND

Cleaning is your step to a successful kitchen cabinet paint job. All those years of grease and fingerprints can lead to a layer of grime that paint won't be able to adhere to. Use soap and water but  if it calls for it - using a degreaser for the toughter jobs might be your best bet.

SANDING

Sanding  an important step in any painting job. Sanding allows for a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Sand all the cabinets by using a sanding tool or sanding paper. Wipe away any residue.

PRIME

Prime all your cabinets - (kit brings an excellent primer) - for better results.

Can I skip this step?

The kit claims to not need any priming. You can if the paint underneath is light enough to cover up but you wouldn't want to.

Here's why:

As paint settles on top of other paint, it creates layers of paint. Over time, paint just sits on top of other paint and never really adheres to the surface of your cabinets. That being said, paint will come off in chunks and expose whatever is underneath it. So do yourself a favor - PRIME!  The more you do a project correctly now, the less headaches later on.

PAINT

You've sanded, primed and now it's time for the fun part  - PAINT!  Choose the finish  you'd like in semigloss or flat. Semigloss is easier to wipe down especially in a high traffic area like the kitchen.

The good thing about this kit is that there are step-by-step instructions on how to paint your cabinets so it doesn't become an over-the-top project.

Change hardware on the cabinet doors to complete the look and if you're feeling adventurous, try creating a backsplash made of paint and painting techniques.
